A. J. Smith is a British author of dark fantasy, writing under the initials of his full name, Tony Smith. He is best known for The Long War, a four-book epic fantasy sequence comprising The Black Guard, The Dark Blood, The Red Prince, and The World Raven, set in a war-torn world contested by human kingdoms, undead legions, and older powers. He followed it with Form & Void, a trilogy opening with The Glass Breaks and continuing through The Sword Falls and The Sea Rises, which expands the same mythology into a new conflict. Published in the UK by Head of Zeus, his novels favor grim battlefields, morally compromised protagonists, and a slow-building cosmic dread reminiscent of the genre's darker, Cthulhu-inflected corners over conventional heroic fantasy.
