Alastair Reynolds (born 1966) is a Welsh science fiction author known for hard-edged space opera grounded in real astrophysics. He holds a PhD in astronomy and spent over a decade as a research scientist for the European Space Agency before leaving in 2004 to write full time. His major work is the Revelation Space series, a sprawling future history of interstellar civilizations, ancient alien threats, and body-modifying factions spanning novels including Revelation Space, Chasm City, Redemption Ark, and Absolution Gap, later extended by Elysium Fire and Inhibitor Phase. He has also written the House of Suns and Poseidon's Children series and the young-adult Revenger trilogy. Reynolds's fiction is noted for its scale, scientific rigor, and bleak sense of deep time. He won the British Science Fiction Award for Chasm City and the Locus Award for Best Young Adult Book for Revenger, among other honors.
