Barrington J. Bayley

Barrington J. Bayley (1937-2008) was an English science-fiction writer closely associated with the New Wave movement of the 1960s and 70s. Born in Birmingham, he published his first story, 'Combat's End,' in Vargo Statten Magazine in 1954, and worked extensively with Michael Moorcock on comics and features for Fleetway Publications before contributing fiction to New Worlds magazine. His novels, including The Star Virus, The Soul of the Robot, and The Zen Gun, were known for a bleak, idea-driven style that influenced later writers such as M. John Harrison, Bruce Sterling, and Iain Banks. Late in his career he wrote Eye of Terror, a novel set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Bayley died in 2008 in Shrewsbury, England; his literary estate is managed by Moorcock.
