Brian Caswell is an Australian author of young-adult science fiction and fantasy, born in Gwernaffield, Wales, in 1954; his family emigrated to Australia when he was twelve. He worked for fifteen years as a high school teacher, writing his debut novel, Merryll of the Stones, for his own students in 1989 before giving up teaching to write full time after his first two books succeeded. Caswell is best known for the Deucalion sequence, hard science fiction about genetic engineering and identity that runs from A Cage of Butterflies through Deucalion to The View from Ararat, alongside standalone novels such as Dreamslip and A Dream of Stars. He won the 1995 Children's Peace Literature Award for Deucalion. Before turning to fiction, Caswell had an earlier career as a singer-songwriter, with a top-40 chart single to his name.
