Brian Williams is a British artist who trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he met future collaborator Roderick Gordon in 1980. After reconnecting decades later, the two first worked together on a screenplay before turning to fiction, self-publishing The Highfield Mole in 2005 as the opening installment of what became the Tunnels series. Williams illustrated and co-wrote the sequence with Gordon, following schoolboy Will Burrows into a vast, claustrophobic subterranean world beneath London populated by a lost civilization and pale, feral Topsoil hunters, through further volumes including Deeper, Freefall, and Closer. Picked up by the Chicken House after its self-published debut, the series became an international bestseller translated into dozens of languages, with Williams bringing a visual artist's eye for detail to its underground world-building.
