Charles E. Carryl

Charles E. Carryl (1841-1920) was an American author and stockbroker, born in New York City. He held a seat on the New York Stock Exchange for thirty-four years beginning in 1874, and his first book, a Stock Exchange Primer (1882), grew out of that career. He turned to children's literature with Davy and the Goblin; or, What Followed Reading "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1885), serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine, followed by The Admiral's Caravan (1892). His nonsense verse, including "The Walloping Window Blind," was written in a style often compared to Lewis Carroll's. His son, Guy Wetmore Carryl, became a poet and humorist in his own right, and some of Charles Carryl's poems have since been set to music, including a 2010 recording by Natalie Merchant.
