Chris McKinney is an American novelist from Honolulu, Hawaii, where he has taught as an associate professor of language arts at Honolulu Community College since 2003. His novels center on working-class characters navigating a changing Hawaii, and his early book The Tattoo won a first-place award from the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association. He is best known for the Water City Trilogy, a near-future science-fiction sequence beginning with Midnight, Water City (2021), which Publishers Weekly named a Best Mystery of 2021 and CrimeReads named a Best Speculative Mystery of 2021, and continuing with Eventide, Water City and Sunset, Water City (both 2023). He also received the 2000 Elliot Cades Award for Literature and wrote the screenplay Paradise Broken.
