Her debut novel, The Devouring Gray (2019), centers on a parallel-dimension prison for an ancient evil connected to a small town's founding families, and was named a Kids' Indie Next List Top Ten Pick and an Indies Introduce Debut Pick; Herman has said the book engages with themes of mental health. She continued the story with The Deck of Omens and The Drowning Summer.
