Daniel Polansky is an American author of fantasy fiction, born in 1984 in Baltimore, Maryland. He is best known for the Low Town series, a hardboiled fantasy sequence that follows a disgraced former intelligence operative turned drug dealer investigating crimes in a corrupt, plague-haunted city, beginning with the novel Low Town. He also wrote The Empty Throne duology, comprising Those Above and Those Below, an epic fantasy that reimagines a Bronze Age-style conflict between god-like rulers and the human cities they govern. His other fiction includes the standalone novella The Builders, featuring a company of anthropomorphic animal mercenaries, and A City Dreaming, an episodic urban fantasy about a drifter navigating a supernatural version of New York City.
