David Anthony Durham

David Anthony Durham (born 1969) is an American novelist raised in New York City to parents of Caribbean descent. He holds an MFA from the University of Maryland and has taught creative writing at several universities, including the Stonecoast MFA program. Durham began his career with historical fiction - Gabriel's Story, Walk Through Darkness, and Pride of Carthage, an account of Hannibal's war against Rome - before turning to epic fantasy with the Acacia Trilogy: The War with the Mein (2007), The Other Lands (2009), and The Sacred Band (2011), which follows the fall and reconstitution of an empire built on a hidden drug trade and slavery. He later wrote the young-adult fantasy The Shadow Prince and the historical novel The Risen: A Novel of Spartacus. Durham won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer and has contributed short fiction to George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards anthologies.
