David Marusek

David Marusek (born 1951) is an American science fiction writer from Buffalo, New York, who spent roughly two decades as a graphic designer, including eleven years teaching the subject at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, before turning to fiction after attending the Clarion West workshop in 1992. His novella "The Wedding Album" won the 1999 Theodore Sturgeon Award, and he expanded that near-future world of digital consciousness and cloned identity into his debut novel Counting Heads (2005) and its sequel Mind Over Ship (2009). He later began the multi-volume Upon This Rock sequence, continuing his interest in dense, socially textured far-future societies. Marusek's fiction is known for its meticulous world-building and slow-burn plotting within richly imagined future economies.
