David Saperstein is an American writer born in Brooklyn in 1937. He is best known for Cocoon (1985), his novel about a group of elderly Florida retirees who discover their swimming pool has been rented as a rejuvenating incubation tank by benevolent aliens; his story for the film adaptation earned him a Hugo Award nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation alongside director Ron Howard and screenwriter Tom Benedek. He continued the story's world in Metamorphosis. His other novels include the disaster thriller Red Devil and, in the Evil on Earth series, Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children, extending his interest in ordinary people confronting extraordinary, often science-fictional, forces.
