Derek Künsken is a Canadian author of speculative fiction, born in Cobourg, Ontario, on March 13, 1971. He holds a master's degree in molecular biology from McMaster University and has worked with street children in Honduras and for the Canadian federal public service; he lives in Ottawa. He is best known for the Quantum Evolution sequence, opening with The Quantum Magician, and its sequel duology beginning with The House of Styx, hard-science-fiction novels of heists, engineered posthuman factions, and interstellar politics. The Quantum Magician was named one of Locus's best first novels of 2018 and one of Barnes & Noble's best alternate-universe novels of the year, while The House of Styx was named one of Locus's best science-fiction novels of 2021. Künsken has also won the Aurora Award for Best Fan Related Work for his convention organizing.
