Dorothy Hearst is an American author who worked in publishing for more than twenty years as an acquiring editor, marketing professional, and book doctor before writing her own fiction; she is also a martial artist and hiker. Her Wolf Chronicles trilogy—Promise of the Wolves, Secrets of the Wolves, and Spirit of the Wolves—imagines the earliest days of the bond between wolves and humans through the eyes of a young wolf whose choices shape the two species' future, drawing praise from animal behaviorist Temple Grandin for its insight into wolf behavior. Hearst also co-wrote the At the Heels of History chapter-book series, viewing historical events through the eyes of dogs, and wrote the instructional Writing Sci-Fi and Fantasy. She regularly visits schools to discuss her books, wolves, and writing.
