Frank Lauria (1935-2022) was an American author born in Brooklyn, New York, known for blending occult detective fiction with countercultural, New Age-inflected storytelling. His best-known creation was the psychic investigator Dr. Owen Orient, introduced in Doctor Orient (1970) and continued across a series including Raga Six and Lady Sativa, which placed supernatural mystery-solving within a 1970s milieu of altered consciousness and Eastern mysticism. Lauria also wrote fiction linked to hit franchises, including novelizations tied to the Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick film series. His later work included the contemporary-set Melody Dawn. Writing across five decades, Lauria remained associated with genre fiction that mixed detective and horror conventions with the psychedelic and spiritual preoccupations of his era.
