Gemma Malley

Gemma Malley is a British author, born in 1971, of dystopian young-adult fiction. She is best known for The Declaration (2008), a dystopian novel set in a future society reshaped by drastic population-control measures; the book won the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire in 2009 and was followed by three further volumes -- The Resistance, The Legacy, and The Returners -- extending the same near-future world. Malley later wrote a second dystopian sequence, The Killables, continuing through The System and The Disappearances, exploring a differently controlled, ideologically engineered society. Across both series, Malley's fiction examines authoritarian social control and rebellion through the perspective of young protagonists caught inside systems built to constrain them, placing her within the wave of British YA dystopian fiction that emerged in the late 2000s.
