H. M. Hoover

H. M. Hoover (1935-2018) was an American writer of children's and young-adult science fiction. Much of her work is set among interstellar societies and centers on friendships that cross generations or species, often featuring young protagonists navigating unfamiliar worlds with quiet, contemplative pacing rather than action-driven plotting. Her novel The Winds of Mars was recognized by the Golden Duck Awards for young adult literature. She wrote consistently within a loosely connected future history that included Children of Morrow and its sequel, while other novels such as The Delikon and The Lost Star extended her recurring interests in isolation, ecological change, and first contact between disparate cultures. Hoover lived for many years in Virginia and died there in 2018 at the age of eighty-three.
