b. 1983

Helen Marshall is a Canadian author, poet, and academic born in 1983 in Sarnia, Ontario. She began publishing poetry around 2004 before moving into weird fiction and horror, and her short story collection Gifts for the One Who Comes After won the 2015 World Fantasy Award for Best Collection. Her earlier collection Hair Side, Flesh Side and her debut novel The Migration, which explores a mysterious illness alongside climate change and pandemic themes, further established her interest in mythic, historically inflected weird fiction. Marshall relocated to the UK in 2014 and later to Australia, working as an academic while continuing to write and edit, including the essay collection New Worlds, New Stories. Her fiction is noted for prose the field has called "consciously and learnedly mythopoeic."
