Ian Watson

Ian Watson (1943-2026) was a British science fiction writer known for cerebral, idea-driven novels exploring language, perception, and reality. After an Oxford degree in English literature, he taught in Tanzania and Japan and lectured on future studies before turning to full-time writing. His debut novel, The Embedding (1973), which drew on ideas from generative linguistics, won France's Prix Apollo; The Jonah Kit (1975) won the BSFA Award for Best Novel. Watson wrote more than two dozen novels, including Miracle Visitors and God's World, and an extensive run of tie-in fiction for the Warhammer 40,000 universe, notably the Inquisition War trilogy. He also received a screen story credit on Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence, developed from Stanley Kubrick's long-gestating project. Watson lived for many years in Gijon, Spain, and died there in April 2026.
