Jacqueline Carey

Jacqueline Carey (born 1964) is an American fantasy author best known for Kushiel's Legacy, a sequence of nine novels across three trilogies set in the alternate-history land of Terre d'Ange, where a doctrine of sacred pain and pleasure shapes both politics and desire. The series opened with her debut, Kushiel's Dart (2001), which won the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and continued through the Imriel and Moirin trilogies. Carey, who studied psychology and English literature at Lake Forest College, has also written the near-future duology Santa Olivia and Saints Astray, the urban fantasy Agent of Hel trilogy, and standalone novels including Miranda and Caliban, a retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest from the perspective of its supporting characters. Her fiction is noted for elaborate world-building and its frank treatment of sexuality and faith within richly imagined secondary worlds.
