James L. Cambias is an American science fiction writer, born in 1966 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a degree in the history and philosophy of science from the University of Chicago. He began his career writing tabletop role-playing game material, including work on GURPS Space, GURPS Mars, and the Star Trek: The Next Generation Role-Playing Game, before turning to fiction; his debut story, "A Diagram of Rapture," was nominated for the Tiptree and Locus Awards and earned him a John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer nomination. His debut novel, A Darkling Sea, a first-contact story involving three mutually alien species, was a finalist for the Locus Award, the John W. Campbell Memorial Award, and the Compton Crook Award. He continued with the techno-thriller Corsair and the coming-of-age novel Arkad's World, and is now writing The Billion Worlds series, beginning with The Godel Operation. He lives in western Massachusetts.
