James Rouch

James Rouch is a British author known for The Zone, a series of military science fiction novels set during a prolonged, non-nuclear Third World War fought across a devastated Central Europe. Beginning with Hard Target (1980) and continuing through titles including Sky Strike, Overkill, Hunter Killer and Killing Ground, the series follows small combat units — reconnaissance teams, mercenaries and special forces — navigating chemical warfare and collapsing front lines in a bleak near-future conflict. Rouch's novels are notable within the "future war" subgenre popular in British paperback fiction of the 1980s for their grim, ground-level focus on soldiers rather than grand strategy. The series continued decades later with Death March (2007), following a long gap after its original 1980s run.
