James Treadwell

James Treadwell is a British novelist from West London who left an academic career in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature to write fantasy fiction full-time. He is best known for the Advent Trilogy -- Advent, Anarchy, and Arcadia -- which imagines a modern world into which real magic abruptly returns after having been suppressed since the Renaissance, drawing on the classic fantasy traditions of Narnia, Middle-earth, Earthsea, and Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising. His fiction is noted for treating the reappearance of magic as genuinely unsettling rather than purely wondrous, closer to horror than escapism. Treadwell has also written the historical novel The Infernal Riddle of Thomas Peach, and has lived in Oxford, Montreal, and London.
