John Helfers is an American author and editor of military fantasy and science fiction, born in 1972 in Lombard, Illinois. He began publishing genre fiction in 1996 and has built his reputation chiefly as a prolific anthology editor, frequently working alongside Martin H. Greenberg on collections such as Warrior Fantastic, Knight Fantastic, Future Crimes, Space Stations, and Future Wars, and later co-editing the Fiction River anthology series. As a novelist he has written military fantasy, including Siege of Night and Fire, and contributed several novels to the long-running post-apocalyptic Deathlands series. He has also written nonfiction, including The Vorkosigan Companion, a guide to Lois McMaster Bujold's science-fiction universe. Helfers continues to divide his output between original fiction, franchise tie-in work, and anthology editing.
