Judith Tarr is an American author of fantasy and historical fantasy born in 1955 in Augusta, Maine, holding degrees in classics and medieval studies, including a doctorate from Yale. Her debut trilogy, The Hound and the Falcon (1985-1986), reimagines elves living in secret through twelfth- and thirteenth-century Europe, and she followed it with the six-volume Avaryan Chronicles and the prehistoric Epona series exploring matriarchal Bronze Age societies. She has also written extensively within Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar universe and, under the pen names Caitlin Brennan and Kathleen Bryan, the White Magic and War of the Rose series respectively. Tarr won the William Crawford Award in 1987 for The Isle of Glass and has been a finalist for the World Fantasy and Locus Awards. She breeds Lipizzan horses at her farm in Arizona.
