Julian Barnes

Julian Barnes is an English novelist, essayist, and short-story writer born in 1946. Early in his career he worked as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary supplement before publishing his first novel, Metroland, in 1980. He gained wide recognition with Flaubert's Parrot, shortlisted for the 1984 Booker Prize, and won the Booker Prize itself in 2011 for The Sense of an Ending. He has also written detective fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh. His novel A History of the World in 10½ Chapters reframes world history as a chain of linked, often satirical stories beginning with Noah's Ark, while England, England imagines an England reduced to a theme-park replica of itself on the Isle of Wight. Barnes has published widely across fiction, essays, and memoir.
