Karen Engelmann is an American author born and raised in Iowa, where she studied drawing, graphics, and theater design at the University of Iowa. She worked internationally as a designer and art director, including posts at a Swedish newspaper, at IKEA, and later for Macy's and Sotheby's in New York, before earning an MFA in creative writing at Goddard College. Her thesis became her debut novel, The Stockholm Octavo (2012), an eighteenth-century Swedish tale of fortune-telling and political intrigue that was translated into fourteen languages, named a New York Times Editors' Choice, and included among Kirkus's Best Fiction of 2012.
