Kay Chronister

Kay Chronister is an American writer of literary horror and dark fantasy, based in Washington state. She began publishing short fiction in the mid-2010s, and her stories were collected in Thin Places (2020), a debut collection steeped in folk horror and the American West. Her first novel, Desert Creatures (2022), reimagines a post-collapse American Southwest as a pilgrimage narrative. She is best known for The Bog Wife (2024), a Southern Gothic novel about the Haddesley family's generations-old bargain with the bog on their land, which was a finalist for the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. Critics have praised her sibling characters and unsettling sense of place, even where the endings divide readers.
