Maile Meloy

Maile Meloy is an American novelist and short-story writer, born in 1972 in Helena, Montana. She studied at Harvard College and earned an MFA from UC Irvine, and her adult fiction—including the story collections Half in Love and Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, and the novels Liars and Saints and A Family Daughter—has appeared regularly in The New Yorker. For younger readers she wrote The Apothecary trilogy, a Cold War-era fantasy adventure following a teenager drawn into alchemy and magic in 1950s London, continued in The Apprentices and The After-Room. Her honors include the PEN/Malamud Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and three of her adult stories were adapted into the 2016 film Certain Women.
