Mary Gentle is a British science-fiction and fantasy author born in 1956. Her work often explores alternate history and richly imagined esoteric settings, beginning with the Orthe duology, Golden Witchbreed (1983) and Ancient Light (1987). She is perhaps best known for Ash: A Secret History, an alternate-history epic that won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 2000, and for the loosely linked White Crow sequence, including Rats and Gargoyles and The Architecture of Desire. Early in her career she was part of the Midnight Rose writers' collective and published erotic fiction under the pseudonym Roxanne Morgan.
