Mary Jo Putney (born 1946 in New York) is an American author of historical and contemporary romance. Trained in English literature and industrial design at Syracuse University, she worked as a graphic designer before turning to fiction, selling her debut novel, The Diabolical Baron, in 1987. She has since published more than two dozen novels, sometimes addressing subjects such as addiction and domestic abuse within conventional romance plots, including the long-running Fallen Angels and Lost Lords series. Writing romantic fantasy as M. J. Putney, she created the Guardian and Dark Mirror series, blending history with magic. A RITA Award winner and Romance Writers of America Honor Roll member, she has also received Romantic Times Career Achievement and Golden Leaf awards.
