Mary Rosenblum

Mary Rosenblum (1952-2018) was an American science fiction and mystery author. Born in Levittown, New York and raised in Pennsylvania, she trained as a biologist at Reed College before attending the Clarion West Writers Workshop in 1988 and beginning her fiction career the following decade. Her science fiction novels include The Drylands, which won the 1994 Compton Crook Award for best first novel, Chimera, and The Stone Garden, alongside short fiction such as "Sacrifice," winner of the Sidewise Award for Alternate History. Under the name Mary Freeman she also wrote a series of gardening-themed mystery novels. Later in life she earned her pilot's certificate and was among a small minority of licensed female pilots in Oregon; she died in 2018 when the plane she was flying crashed near La Center, Washington.
