Michael Blumlein

Michael Blumlein (1948-2019) was an American physician and writer whose fiction drew on his medical career at the University of California, San Francisco, where he practiced and taught for decades. His work moved fluidly between science fiction, fantasy, and horror, often probing the body, illness, and transformation with a clinician's exactness; his 1984 debut story "Tissue Ablation and Variant Regeneration: A Case Report" set the tone. Novels including The Movement of Mountains and The Healer appeared alongside acclaimed short fiction, some later gathered in Year's Best Weird Fiction anthologies. His work was nominated for both the World Fantasy Award and the Bram Stoker Award, and appeared regularly in Interzone and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, with editor Ellen Datlow featuring him in multiple anthologies.
