Michael Swanwick (born 1950) is an American science fiction and fantasy writer known for stylistic range, moving fluidly between hard SF, surreal fantasy, and literary pastiche. He began publishing short fiction in the early 1980s and has become one of the genre's most decorated short-story writers, winning multiple Hugo Awards for his short fiction between 1999 and 2004. His novels include Stations of the Tide (1991), a Nebula Award winner set on a world facing engineered apocalyptic flooding, and the Iron Dragon sequence - The Iron Dragon's Daughter, The Dragons of Babel, and The Iron Dragon's Mother - which reimagines industrial-age fantasy with mechanical dragons and faerie factories. He also writes the comic Darger and Surplus stories with Gardner Dozois. Swanwick has won the World Fantasy Award, the Theodore Sturgeon Award, and the Eastern European Aelita Prize, and contributes criticism and interviews to the field.
