Natalie Haynes

Natalie Haynes is an English writer, broadcaster, and classicist, born in Birmingham in 1974. She read Classics at Cambridge and spent roughly a decade as a stand-up comedian on the UK circuit before turning her academic training toward fiction and popular nonfiction about the ancient world. Her novels retell Greek myth from perspectives usually left at the margins: A Thousand Ships (2019) reconstructs the Trojan War through its women, while Stone Blind (2022) retells the story of the gorgon Medusa as a wronged figure rather than a monster. Alongside her fiction, Haynes has built a parallel career as a broadcaster and popularizer of classical literature, including a long-running BBC Radio 4 series on the classics. Her work is characterized by a sharp comic sensibility inherited from her years in comedy, applied to serious classical scholarship and to fiction that consistently recenters women written out of the original myths.
