Nicola Barker is an English novelist and short-story writer born in Ely, Cambridgeshire in 1966, whose family relocated to South Africa when she was nine. Active since 1994, she is known for exploring damaged or eccentric characters in bleak, isolated settings, often through experimental prose. Her novels Wide Open, Behindlings, and Clear: A Transparent Novel form an informal Thames Gateway trilogy, continued by the acclaimed Darkmans (2007), an 838-page epic shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She won the David Higham Prize for Fiction in 1993 for Love Your Enemies, the International Dublin Literary Award in 2000 for Wide Open, and the Goldsmiths Prize in 2017 for H(a)ppy, alongside further Booker Prize and John Llewellyn Rhys Prize recognition across her career.
