P. Schuyler Miller

P. Schuyler Miller (1912-1974) was an American science fiction writer and critic. Trained as a chemist, he worked as a technical writer for General Electric and later for the Fisher Scientific Company while building a parallel career in the pulps, publishing science fiction stories from the early 1930s in magazines such as Astounding, Amazing Stories, Weird Tales, and Unknown, and co-authoring the novel Genus Homo with L. Sprague de Camp. He is best remembered for "The Reference Library," his monthly review column in Astounding/Analog from 1951 until his death, which made him one of the field's most influential critics; he received a special Hugo Award for book reviewing in 1963. With John D. Clark he also produced an early scholarly map and career outline of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. A lifelong amateur archaeologist, he died on an archaeological tour in West Virginia.
