Paul Johnston is a Scottish crime novelist, born in 1957 in Edinburgh, best known for the Quintilian Dalrymple series of noir detective novels. Beginning with Body Politic (1997), the series is set in a near-future, dystopian Edinburgh that has become an independent city-state under an authoritarian council of philosopher-guardians, with private investigator Dalrymple navigating its corrupt politics and crimes. In Body Politic, Johnston reimagines the real Fettes College, an Edinburgh private school, as a ruin used by drug traffickers after being destroyed in the city's fictional history. The series continued through The Bone Yard, Water of Death, The House of Dust, and later entries including Skeleton Blues and Impolitic Corpses, sustaining Johnston's blend of speculative world-building and hardboiled procedural plotting across more than two decades.
