Peter Carey

Peter Carey is an Australian novelist born in 1943 in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. He is one of only a few writers to have won the Booker Prize twice, for Oscar and Lucinda (1988) and True History of the Kelly Gang (2001), and has won Australia's Miles Franklin Award three times. His other novels include Illywhacker, a picaresque tale narrated by a self-proclaimed liar; Bliss; and The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith, which incorporates fabulist and speculative elements into its portrait of an invented nation. Carey studied chemistry and zoology at Monash University and worked in advertising before turning to fiction full time, and has taught creative writing at Hunter College in New York since relocating there in 1990. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012.
