Peter Heller is an American novelist and longtime kayaker who grew up in New York, attended the Putney School in Vermont, and studied at Dartmouth College before earning an MFA at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he held a Michener-Copernicus Fellowship for poetry. He built an early career as a journalist and adventure writer for NPR, Men's Journal, and Outside, publishing narrative nonfiction such as Hell or High Water before turning to fiction with The Dog Stars (2012), a post-apocalyptic novel that established him as a novelist and was adapted into a 2026 film directed by Ridley Scott. His later novels include The Painter, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller, and Burn (2024). His nonfiction book Kook won a National Outdoor Book Award. He lives in Denver, Colorado.
