Philip Jose Farmer (1918-2009) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer known for pushing the genre's boundaries with frank sexuality, religious speculation, and playful reinvention of classic pulp characters. He is best known for the Riverworld series, beginning with To Your Scattered Bodies Go (1971), in which the whole of humanity is resurrected along the banks of an endless river, and for the World of Tiers novels, set among artificial pocket universes reached through hidden gates. His Wold Newton concept, developed across essays and novels, imagined Tarzan, Doc Savage, and dozens of other pulp heroes as blood relations descended from witnesses to a 1795 meteorite strike. Farmer worked for years as a technical writer before becoming a full-time novelist in 1969, eventually publishing dozens of books from his home in Peoria, Illinois. He won three Hugo Awards and received the SFWA Grand Master Award and World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, both in 2001.
