R. Scott Bakker is a Canadian novelist and philosopher, born in Simcoe, Ontario, in 1967 and educated at the University of Western Ontario and Vanderbilt University. He is best known for The Second Apocalypse, an epic dark fantasy sequence rooted in his philosophical interests in language, belief, and the nature of consciousness, comprising The Prince of Nothing trilogy and its continuation, The Aspect-Emperor. Densely philosophical and morally uncompromising, his fantasy is often noted for its unusually bleak, unsentimental treatment of power and faith. He has also written standalone science fiction and thrillers, including Neuropath and Disciple of the Dog. An outspoken critic of organized religion, Bakker maintains a long-running blog discussing philosophy alongside his fiction.
