Raymond Hawkey

Raymond Hawkey was an English graphic designer, journalist, and novelist, born in 1930 in Plymouth and educated at Plymouth School of Art before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. He built a prominent career in newspaper and book design, serving as design director of the Daily Express, presentation director of The Observer, and a designer on the launch of The Independent, and is credited with the covers of the first edition of Len Deighton's The IPCRESS File and the Pan paperback editions of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. Alongside design, Hawkey co-wrote the techno-thriller Wild Card with Roger Bingham and later wrote Side-Effect and It as solo novels, forming a loose trilogy of near-future conspiracy thrillers. He also wrote and co-designed the pop-up book Evolution: The Story of the Origins of Humankind. He died in 2010.
