Richard Monaco was an American novelist, born in 1940 in New York City, best known for the Saga of Parsival, an Arthurian series that reimagined the Grail legend with a harder, more psychologically grounded edge than traditional retellings. It began with Parsival, or a Knight's Tale (1977) and continued through The Grail War (1979) and The Final Quest (1981), with the series later extended by Blood and Dreams, Broken Stone, and Journey to the Flame. He also wrote the standalone novel Runes (1984) and, decades later, Lost Years: The Quest for Avalon (2012), a further continuation of the Parsival story. Monaco died in 2017.
