Rosel George Brown

Rosel George Brown was an American science fiction author born in 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana, who died of lymphoma in 1967 at the age of forty-one. Trained in ancient Greek at Sophie Newcomb College and the University of Minnesota, she worked as a teacher and welfare visitor in Louisiana while publishing science fiction from the late 1950s onward in magazines including Galaxy and Fantasy & Science Fiction. She is best remembered for her Sibyl Sue Blue novels, which followed a hard-drinking, cigar-smoking policewoman-turned-space-detective, a rare and pointedly unglamorous female protagonist for the genre in her era; the second book, The Waters of Centaurus, appeared posthumously in 1970. She also co-wrote Earthblood with Keith Laumer and was nominated for the 1959 Hugo Award for Best New Author.
