S. F. Said

S. F. Said is a British children's author born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1967. He is best known for the Varjak Paw books, beginning with Varjak Paw (2003), which follows a young cat of an ancient, secretive breed who must leave his sheltered home to save his family, drawing on martial-arts and hero's-journey storytelling within a feline fantasy world. The sequel, The Outlaw Varjak Paw, followed in 2005. Said's novel Phoenix (2013) moved into space opera, following a boy who discovers a power that marks him as central to an interstellar war. Tyger (2022), set in an alternate 1930s London under authoritarian rule, blends alternate history with myth and fable. Across a relatively small body of work, Said has built a reputation for ambitious, richly illustrated novels that use fantastical premises to explore courage, identity, and resistance to oppression.
