S. L. Huang is an American author of science fiction with a mathematics degree from MIT. Huang is known for the Cas Russell series, beginning with Zero Sum Game (2014), which follows a mercenary whose superhuman mathematical ability lets her calculate her way through combat and heists, continuing through Null Set and Critical Point. Huang's 2023 novel The Water Outlaws, a gender-flipped science-fantasy retelling of the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, was a finalist for the 2024 Nebula Award, and Huang won the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Short Story for "As the Last I May Know." Before writing full time, Huang worked as a Hollywood stunt performer and armorer on productions including Battlestar Galactica. Huang identifies as genderqueer and writes across science fiction, fantasy, and short fiction.
