Stoney Compton

Stoney Compton, born Leonard W. Compton, is an American science fiction author and illustrator best known for alternate history novels that reimagine North America under continued Russian rule. His debut novel, Russian Amerika (2007), depicts a twentieth century in which the Russian-American Company never ceded Alaska to the United States, and its sequel, Alaska Republik (2011), continues the saga into a divergent Second World War. He returned to the same timeline with the Prefecture series, beginning with Incident in Alaska Prefecture (2017), and continued exploring speculative history in Twilight of Empire (2019). His earlier short fiction, including Whalesong and When the Ship Came (1994), established his interest in Alaskan settings and history well before his novels appeared. Compton's fiction is distinguished by its close attention to Alaska Native cultures and to the texture of a North America shaped by a different colonial outcome.
