Sylvia Waugh

Sylvia Waugh (1935-2022) was a British children's author from Gateshead who worked as a teacher, careers advisor, and librarian before publishing her debut novel, The Mennyms, in 1993 at the age of 57. The Mennyms introduced a family of life-sized rag dolls secretly living as humans in an English town, and it won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize; Waugh continued the story across four further books, including Mennyms Under Siege and Mennyms Alive. She later wrote the Ormingat trilogy -- Space Race, Earthborn, and Who Goes Home? -- about children caught between Earth and an alien world. Waugh's fiction was translated internationally and received honors including the Birmingham Readers & Writers Children's Book Award and Vienna's Kinderbuchpreis, cementing her reputation as a distinctive voice in British children's fantasy.
