T. C. McCarthy is an American science fiction author whose career began with the short story "The Best Liar Ever" in 2010. He is best known for the Subterrene War trilogy—Germline, Exogene, and Chimera—a bleak near-future series set in an endless resource war fought partly underground by genetically engineered soldiers, amid climate change and ecological collapse. His debut novel, Germline, won the Compton Crook Award. McCarthy later moved toward more conventional space opera with the Tyger series, beginning with Tyger Burning and continuing in Tyger Bright, following a bounty hunter navigating interstellar conflict. His fiction is noted for grounding extrapolated future warfare in plausible, only moderately exaggerated technology and destruction, reflecting a hard-edged, unsentimental take on military science fiction.
